About
The current Captain Henry Jackman was built in 2021. She is a Great Lakes bulk carrier, and joined Algoma Central Corporation’s fleet summer of 2023 as its most efficient vessel. The ship’s energy efficient design is called “Equinox 3.0.”
Jeff DeRosario, Algoma’s Vice President-Commercial, has recounted that the man the ship was named after, Captain Henry Jackman, immigrated to Huron County from the United Kingdom in 1851. He was a farmer and decided he wanted to become a seafarer on the Great Lakes. Captain Jackman eventually became a well-known schooner captain. He built up a fleet of a few vessels, and earned his Master of inland steamships designation in the 1870s, a time when sailing ships were rapidly being replaced by steamships.
DeRosario said during the initiation ceremony, “It is with considerable pride that his descendants, more than a century later, are able to name the newest, most efficient and innovative Equinox class vessel in his enduring honor.”
Algoma owns and operates the largest fleet of dry and liquid bulk carriers operating on the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway. Captain Henry Jackman set a record on her first voyage for cargo size for grain at the starting point of Thunder Bay (31,100 Metric Tonnes).
The vessel mostly plies the waters between Thunder Bay and Baie Comeau, with frequent stops in Hamilton and Montreal.
